If you read one of my earlier blogs, you’ll know that the most important thing to do when applying for a mining job is to read the job advert in detail and tailor your mining resume to match.
How to get from applicant to asset
The next thing you need to do that will take you from an applicant to an asset is to show the potential employer what you have achieved. Sure, you might be the right type of applicant they’re looking for technically, but what makes you different from the next applicant who has the same job title and similar experience?
Your mining resume is the tool to get you to the all-important interview stage. It’s up to you to let the employer know why they should interview you.
Show the employer why you’d be an asset to their team.
I know it’s difficult to think of things you’ve achieved throughout your career but trust me, once given a chance to really think about it, you’ll be surprised at how much you’ve contributed to the business’s success. The value you brought to your current and previous employers shows your potential worth to new employers.
Ask yourself these questions:
- Have I designed any safety improvements?
- Have I suggested any cost-saving techniques?
- Have I improved relationships with stakeholders?
- Have I increased the reliability of assets?
- Have I delivered a project ahead of schedule?
If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, that’s the information you need to add to your mining resume and quantify your achievements with metrics. For example,
“I was able to deliver the XX Project XX weeks ahead of schedule through XX, saving the business XX.”
Dig a little deeper
A client I worked with recently struggled to think of things during our phone consultation. They told me that they “just get $h!t done.”
While these types of people are the ones you want on your crew, there’s absolutely no way I could put that on their resume. After digging a little deeper, it turns out the client had implemented impressive cost-saving initiatives and efficiency improvements throughout the department. Together, we were able to show this on their resume, and they were offered the job on the spot at the interview.
People often find it hard to put their experience into words. That’s where I come in.
I can help you put the information from your brain onto paper (well, the computer) and into your mining resume. The benefit of working with a Resume Writer who works 1:1 with you is that I can provide an objective perspective.
I want to know about your mining career in detail. I want you to brag. I want you to think outside the box. I am happy to get your late-night emails with all the examples you have remembered since our phone consultation.
I can create a resume you’re happy with and one that Recruiters and Hiring Managers want to read.
In summary,
- Read the job advert in detail
- Tailor your mining resume to the job advert
- Don’t be afraid to brag about your achievements
Now is not the time to be humble. Show the Recruiters and the Hiring Managers that you’re not just an applicant; you’re the applicant they have been looking for.
