The Most Important Thing You Need To Do When Applying For Your Next Mining Job

Whether you’re an Apprentice or a Supervisor, if you’re looking for a new job in mining, this is the most important thing you need to do when you’re applying for your next mining job:

Read the job advertisement

It sounds like a no-brainer, but I mean – really take the time to read the job advertisement.

Don’t just look at the title of Mechanical Maintainer and think, “Yep, that’s me”, and send in the same mining resume that you’ve been using for the last 10 years.

Read the job advertisement in detail.

Every word in that ad is a clue, providing insights into the employer’s preference for their next hire.

  • How many years of experience do you need?
  • Which specific skills do you need?
  • It is mobile plant or fixed plant?
  • Is it an open pit or an underground operation?
  • Have you worked on the specific equipment before?
  • Do you have the correct tickets or licenses?
  • Have you worked with the commodity before?
  • What are the highly regarded, but not essential skills and capabilities?

The Recruiter and Hiring Manager have sat down together and worked out what needs to be on the resume to be suitable for the job, in terms of experience, skills, and team fit. The job advertisement tells you exactly what experience you need to have on your resume to be considered by the Recruiter for an initial phone screening call.

Once the Recruiter is satisfied that you are a good match, they will send your resume through to the Hiring Manager for review. At this stage, the Hiring Manager will decide if they want to interview you based on what’s written on your resume and the information from the Recruiter. Your resume is your tool for getting an interview, so it needs to be specific for that job.

Avoid the one-size-fits-all approach.

Tailor your resume to highlight the skills and experiences that fit the job requirements. Use the job advertisement as a guide to tell you what needs to be on your resume. By taking the time to read the advertisement and tailoring your application and resume to the role, you are showing that you are pro-active, pay attention to detail, and importantly that you really want the role and are a good fit!

Give the Recruiter the information they are looking for.

  • Make it easy for them to send your resume through to the Hiring Manager.
  • Show the Recruiter and the Hiring Manager that you have done your research and that you’re not just another applicant with the right job title.
  • Show them you have the specific skills and experience that they need.
  • Show them you have worked with the specific equipment they have on site.
  • Show them you are the right person for the interview.

Your resume will get you the interview, but getting the job offer is up to you. That’s a discussion for another day!

Cheers to your mining career,
